Coconut Oil: why you should look for the word “virgin” when you buy Coconut Oil
Virgin oil, as opposed to cooking grade – refined Coconut Oil, gives all that the tree can give as an oil. None of the antioxidants are heated out of the oil.
If you have ever wondered what the difference is between tastless refined coconut oil (RBD), and Virgin Coconut Oil, then you’ve thought about the very core difference between the oils we sell, and most of the oil in the supermarkets. The Coconut Oil on the left is Virgin, food grade oil. Nice and white, and bursting with flavour. The right hand side bottle has Coconut Oil extracted without Chemicals. It is not Virgin, the taste and smell have been heated out of it. It is tasteless, yellow, and separated. It lost it’s phytonutrients (antioxidants) in the deodorising process.
Sometimes the white Coconut flesh used to create Virgin Coconut Oil is exposed to smoke, in a simple outdoor drying process. This can damage the oil, making it yellow when liquid, and slightly less than bright white when solid.
Tasteless oil is refined.

Deodorised (RBD) may have hexane in it.
Hexane is a solvent. It can be found in petrol. We don’t want clients exposed to solvents in their foods.
Wikipedia states,”The long-term toxicity of n-hexane in humans is well known. Extensive peripheral nervous system failure is known to occur in humans chronically exposed to levels of n-hexane ranging from 400 to 600 ppm, with occasional exposures up to 2,500 ppm.”
Dr Mercola states, “This chemical, hexane, is toxic, and banned from use in Organic food.”
Even if it didn’t have Hexane in it, we know it will have other things in it, and organic VIRGIN coconut oil is a whole food that needs no refining.
We have melted three RBD oils, and all of them were fully or slightly yellow liquids, compared to virgin coconut oil.
There is no yellow in a virgin oil when it is solid, nor when it is liquid.
Many people who have tried deodorised coconut oil, wonder if there is any difference in health benefits between refined oil, and virgin oil. Firstly it is important to note that any coconut oil will have lauric acid, and ketones. But Virgin coconut oil will have the less processing than any deodorised coconut oil, even if it is, organic and cold pressed!
We receive emails like this one following quite often. “My friend is using a “clay filtered “coconut oil – is this oil healthy??”
We believe there is a reason why that oil is filtered in clay. The most likely reason is because the oil producers know it doesn’t taste like a coconut.
In Vanuatu and some other locations they slowly simmer the coconut milk to make oil. This exposes the oil to the air for long periods of time. Virgin Coconut Oil, produced without a lot of heat is full of antioxidants that help our body’s cells to fight the cell deterioration we call “oxidation”. Some brands of oil steam the oil to remove the taste and smell, which destroys the “antioxidants”.
But back to the Islands.
In some cases where the oil is being producted the air is filled from smoke from the fire used to heat it. So it is common enough for Island coconut oil to have a smokey taste.
Our Pacific Island Coconut Oils does not have that smokey taste and have a pleasant faintly cocont smell. Both of them, (currently Samoa and Tonga) have a distinct taste and smell of their own, but neither of them were clay distilled, or steamed.
Other coconut oils produced from sun dried coconut meat have been exposed to air as coconut flesh. This oil is yellow, instead of clear when liquid.
You don’t have to eat, cook or rub your skin with yellow oil…
There is some yellow in high quality virgin coconut oil, but it settles at the bottom of the container, this is not the same thing. It appears to us, from our experience with Virgin Coconut Oil that Inferior grades of coconut oil are all yellow when liquid, and there is a part mottled yellow when solid.

Hey, if someone wants oil that is exposed to the air for long periods in the production, and is yellow all the time when liquid, you can buy it.
It is cheaper, even though it requires a lot more processing with refining (filtering with clay and sup high heat steam treatment as well).
All Coconut Oil has medium chain fatty acids. Only tasty, coconut or savoury smelling oil that has not been subjected to super high steam treatment have antioxidants in it.
Virgin Coconut Oil needs no refining
We firmly believe that Virgin Coconut Oil is a wholefood revitalising oil that needs no refining to give animals or humans its life giving benefits, sucked from the sea water it lives near.

At the end of the day, we need to realise that “Organic” doesn’t always mean the least processing has been used. By way of example, you can raise “Organic” cows for beef, and feed them in concrete lots, and raise “Organic” chickens inside on organic grains and feeds. Both practises, if they are not supplimented with free range, undermine the idea of an “Organic” animal lifestyle. So it is with coconut oil.
Virgin coconut oil is the gold standard, and if it is wild harvested from a remote location, it is as good as organic certified, and in many cases better!
Dr Mercola uncovers Hexane in Organic Food
Dr Mercola, of Mercola.com, has recently uncovered a blight in the USDA’s reputation by pointing out an ingredient in some “Organic” baby formula, approved “Organic” by them, has been extracted by a chemical. This chemical, hexane, is toxic, and banned from use in Organic food.
The moral of the lesson is simple. Just because coconut oil is “Organic”, or even “Certified Organic”, it doesn’t mean it is the best quality product available. Two of our suppliers have deodorised Coconut Oil. We don’t and won’t sell them. It’s not what we do.
We sell unrefined;Virgin Unfermented Oil, Virgin Slightly Fermented Oil, and Virgin Fully Fermented oil. We don’t sell deodorised oil, even if it does not have chemical processing.
Hexane is the type of thing used to make RBD deodorised coconut oil in many oil plants. Neither Ceres nor Blue Coconut use chemicals (Hexane) in their processing, but they do use super high heat and steam in processing the oil.
